Saudi Arabia is quickly establishing itself as a global leader in energy storage, a move critical to its ambitious transition to renewable energy. With a national goal to install 11 GWh of battery storage capacity by 2025, the Kingdom is aggressively investing in advanced grid technologies to support its rapidly expanding solar and wind projects.

One standout project is the Bisha 2.6 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), one of the largest in the world. This landmark project, currently under development, will provide much-needed flexibility to the national grid, ensuring the stability and reliability of intermittent renewable energy sources. These batteries will play a vital role in stabilizing the electricity grid during peak demand and compensating for fluctuations in solar and wind output.

Chinese companies such as BYD and CATL have been instrumental in supplying cost-effective lithium-ion batteries, which are being deployed across multiple sites. Moreover, strategic partnerships with European firms are helping Saudi Arabia navigate the regulatory, technical, and logistical challenges of large-scale energy storage deployment.

Beyond electricity grid stability, energy storage is central to Saudi’s plans to export clean energy in the form of green hydrogen. For instance, the integration of battery storage into hydrogen production facilities ensures continuous operation even when sunlight or wind is unavailable.

This battery boom is transforming the Kingdom's energy sector, enabling a cleaner, more resilient, and export-ready power infrastructure.

As Saudi Arabia accelerates toward a diversified, resilient, and decarbonised energy future, innovations like large-scale battery storage play a pivotal role in bridging ambition with execution. These advancements not only stabilise renewable power generation but also position the Kingdom as a global hub for clean energy export, particularly in green hydrogen.

This transformative momentum will take center stage at EMTEC 2025, Saudi Arabia’s leading environmental and technology conference. As industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers gather from around the world, EMTEC 25 will provide a platform to explore the evolving energy storage landscape, showcase cutting-edge technologies, and discuss the strategic pathways that will shape the Kingdom’s sustainable future.
